Parents and families are an extremely important resource for students embarking on a potentially life-changing education abroad experience. Here are some specific ways to show support and be involved in the process:

• Talk with your student about study abroad. Encourage your student to be involved in the process, and make sure they’re prepared for the realities of a different country, with different expectations, attitudes, and customs. You may have questions that your student hasn’t thought to ask, and just talking through their options may bring up interests, questions and/or concerns they can bring to their education abroad advisor.

• Read through the website and encourage your student to talk with an education abroad advisor. Our office is available to guide your student through the study abroad process. Reading the resources posted on our website is the best way for you to get informed about your student’s education abroad options. If you have questions, consider discussing these with your student and having them find the answers, either through meeting with their education abroad advisor or contacting the relevant host program/institution. This is the best way to ensure your student is prepared and informed for their experience.

• Understand your student’s responsibilities. Advisors in the Office of Global Engagement are available to advise students on our approved study abroad programs and the study abroad process, provide pre-departure information, help with course registration and credit transfer, and organize information sessions and pre-departure orientation meeting.
